Hi, I’m so glad you want to start your sewing journey! My Neck Roll is just one of the many projects you can learn how to make. When you are finished make sure to take a photo so you can share it with everyone!

Step 1) Pattern Template
You will need a piece of poster board, ruler, pen and paper cutting scissors to make a pattern template measuring 14 x 21 inches. It is best to get help from an adult making this so your template is square.
Picture
Step 2) Materials Needed

*1 Flat (or Fat) Quarter measuring 18" x 22"
* 3/4 of a yard of quilt batting
*1 yard of 1/4 inch ribbon
Picture
Step 3) Tracing Pattern
Put the right sides of your fabric together. Fold the pattern in half and place it on your fabric, lining up the fold of the pattern with the fold of your fabric. Put 2 weights on top and carefully trace around your pattern template with a pencil.

Step 4) Cutting
Carefully start cutting along the line. Turn your fabric as you cut, to reach each side. Don't forget to take your weights off as you turn, so the fabric doesn’t crinkle. It’s very important that the fabric stays flat.

Step 5A) Ironing Ends
Unfold your fabric, and choose one of the shorter sides. Fold the fabric in about 1/2 inch. Being very careful not to burn your fingers, begin to iron the fold down, moving your hand out of the way as you iron. You may want to ask an adult for help

Step 5B) Ironing Another Fold
Once you have ironed this first fold, fold the fabric over another half inch, and iron it down. Having these two folds will prevent the fabric from fraying. Turn your fabric and iron the same two folds on the other short side.
Picture
Step 5C) Pinning Short Side
Now it is time to pin. Place 4 pins along one of the edges that you just ironed down. That way your edges will stay down as you sew. Turn your fabric, and place 4 pins along the other edge.

Step 5D) Sewing Short Side
Next, you will sew down the folds. Line your fabric up with the edge of the presser foot. Don't forget to lock-it-in with a back-stitch, then sew down the folds you just made on both sides. Take out the pins as you sew, and cut the loose hanging threads once you have finished.
Picture
Step 6A) Pinning Long Side
Fold your fabric in half, with the long sides lining up together. Place pins all along this long edge. The ends might be hard to put pins in, because there are so many layers. If you need help, you can always ask an adult.

Picture
Step 6B) Sewing Long Side
Line your fabric up with the side of your presser foot, and sew along the long side that you just pinned. Sew all the way from one end to the other. Take out the pins as you sew. Don't forget to lock-it-in on both sides, and cut the loose hanging threads.

Picture
Step 7) Turning
Now that you have sewn your long end, your fabric should have two open ends. Make sure that you have removed all of your pins. Turn your fabric inside out, so that the right side is facing you, and you have one long roll. Set your fabric to the side for now.

Picture
Step 8A) Folding the Batting
Your piece of batting should already be folded in half (this is the way it was cut off of the roll). So now we want to fold it into thirds. Fold one side in, and then the other side. Make sure that your folds line up perfectly with the edges of the fabric.

Picture
Step 8B) Rolling the Batting
Start at one of the short ends of your batting, and begin to roll it. You will roll it just like you roll up a sleeping bag. It will start to wrinkle a bit, so press the wrinkles down and roll it tight. Now it's time to stuff our pillow!

Picture
Step 8C) Stuffing
Squeeze the roll of batting tightly, and slip your fabric onto the roll of batting, just like stuffing a sleeping bag into its stuff sack. Take your time, and pull the fabric on bit by bit. When you are done stuffing, the batting should be right in the middle of the fabric.
Picture
Step 9A) Cutting Ribbon
Fold your piece of ribbon in half. Cut the ribbon at this fold, and cut it at an angle, so that it doesn't fray. Now you have two ribbons, and you will use these to tie the ends of your pillow.

Picture
Step 9B) Tying Ends
Take one end of your roll, and bunch it all together. Take one of your ribbons and wrap it around this bunched-up end. Wrap it around two times, so that it holds. Tie the ribbon in a knot, and then in a bow. Do the same on the other side.
