Hi, I’m so glad you want to start your sewing journey! My Kitchen Apron is just one of the many projects you can learn how to make. When you are finished make sure to take a photo so you can share it with everyone!
Step 1) Pattern Template
You will need a piece of poster board, ruler, pen and paper cutting scissors to make a pattern template measuring 14 x 21 inches. It is best to get help from an adult making this so your template is square. |
Step 2) Materials Needed
* 2 flat quarters (in different prints or colors) * 2 yards of 1-inch ribbon * 1 large safety pin * 1 mini rosette |
Step 2A) Line Up Fabric
Lay out fabric. Be sure to place the right sides of your fabric together. Line up the edges of your fabric, and press all of the wrinkles out with your hand. Place the pattern on top and line up the edge of the fabric with the edge of the pattern. |
Step 2B) Trace & Cut
Place your weights on your fabric. Trace around the 3 sides of your fabric not lined up with your pattern. Make sure you don’t move your fabric as you trace! Now you can cut. As you cut, take the weights off when you turn your fabric. Save any scraps for future projects. |
Step 3A) Pin
Make sure the right sides of the fabric are together, and pin together the bottom of your fabric, and the two side edges. Leave the top unpinned for now. Place a pin into your fabric every 6 inches, from one edge to the other. |
Step 4) Sew
Now it’s time to sew! Line your fabric up under your presser foot, leaving room for a ½” seam. Lock-it-in, and begin sewing. Gently pull your fabric through and hold it steady with your left hand as you are sewing. This will help you to keep a straight line as you sew. |
Step 6A) Ironing
Using your hands, press out any folds that you have from turning your fabric. Using your fingers, carefully work out any extra fabric that is up in the fold (this is fabric that did not get turned out all the way). Once this fold is worked out, use your iron to press the seams flat. |
Step 6B) Ironing Top
Next, fold the top edge of your apron down ½”, and iron this fold down (be sure that you get both layers!) Then, fold it down once more at 1 ½”. Press this fold with your iron. This will be the casing for your ribbon |
Step 7A) Pin & Sew
Pin the top of edge of the apron (the casing for your ribbon). Put one pin on the end, another 6” away, another 6” away, and one at the end. Line up the bottom of your casing fold with your presser foot. Lock-it-in, and begin sewing along the bottom edge of the casing fold. |
Step 7B) Sewing Casing
Make sure to sew this as straight as you can. When you get to the end, line up the end of the fabric, so you have a straight edge and your fabric is not out of line. You may need to line it up using your fingers. Lock-it-in and clip your threads. |
Step 8A) Insert Ribbon
Take your large safety pin and pin it onto the end of your ribbon. Then insert the safety pin with the ribbon on it into the casing, and move it through the casing using both hands. |
Step 8B) Moving the Ribbon Through
It can be a bit tricky to get the ribbon through to the other side, but take your time. Use one hand to push the safety pin in, and one to pull it through. You’ll be able to move the pin (and the ribbon) slowly though the casing. |
Step 9) Insert Pin
Once you have moved your ribbon all the way through, take the safety pin out and cut the end of the ribbon to make it clean. Fold your apron in half. Make sure the ribbon ends are the same length on both sides, and then stick a pin right in the middle, into the casing. |
Step 10A) Hand Sewing a Base
You will add your rosette to the place where you have pinned your apron, right in the middle, to hold your ribbon in place. First, thread your needle. Put the needle through your fabric once, then back through. Do this a couple of times to create a base before you sew your rosette. |
Step 10B) Adding the Rosette
Stick your needle through the end of the rosette (about a ¼”) and then back through the fabric where you just came from. Sew back through to the top, then back through the rosette, and repeat a couple of times to make sure that your rosette is on securely. |
Step 11) Gathering
Taking one side of your apron, push the fabric along the ribbon towards the center of the apron. This will create a gather. Once you have gathered, put a pin in the edge of the casing to hold the gather in place. Gather the other side, too, and pin this side as well |
Step 12A) Sewing Straps, One Way
Put your pinned edge under the presser foot (you can remove the pin). Line the edge of the casing with your presser foot. Then lock-it-in and sew back and forth a couple of times, making sure to sew as straight as you can along the side of the casing. Lock-it-in one last time, and clip your threads. |
Step 12B) Sewing Straps, Another Way
Line the edge of the casing up with your presser foot. Lock-it-in and sew to the other end of the casing. When you get to the end, pivot your fabric so that it is facing the other way, and sew to the other end. Pivot again. Do this a few times, then lock-it-in. |
