Pattern Template
You will need a piece of poster board, ruler, pen and paper cutting scissors to make a pattern template measuring 7 ½ x 15 inches. It is best to get help from an adult making this so your template is square. |
Step 1) Materials Needed
* 1 flat quarter of quilt fabric, washed & ironed * 6 inches of Velcro (one side hooks, one side loops) * 1 rosette |
Step 2A) Trace & Cut
Fold your flat quarter in half, placing the faces together. Place your pattern on the edge of your fabric, leaving about ½” between the edge of your pattern and the edge of your fabric. Place your weights, and trace around your pattern. |
Step 2B) Cut Pattern
Move your pattern, replace the weights and then cut your fabric. Make sure to take your weights off when you turn your fabric to reach it better, and take your time. You will end up with two separate pieces of fabric. |
Step 3) Press Folds
Fold both pieces of fabric in half, with the right sides facing out. Make sure that the edges of the fabric are lined up. Using the edge of your table, press the folds in both pieces of fabric. Place pins on the sides of the folds to hold them down. |
Step 4) Pin Velcro
Place one of the Velcro sides about 1/4" from the top fold of one of the pieces of fabric. Pin Velcro in place, using as many pins as needed. Place the other piece of Velcro on the other piece of your fabric, in the same place, and pin this down. |
Step 5A) Sew Velcro
Starting at the very end of your fabric, lock-it-in, and sew the top edge of your piece of Velcro. You can sew off the edge of your fabric, turn it around, lock-in the other side and then sew the bottom edge of the Velcro down. Clip your threads. |
Step 5B) Sew Down Edges of Velcro
Next, sew the two small edges of the Velcro in place. Do this by sewing over the edge of the Velcro once, then backwards over it once, just like you would do to lock-in a stitch. Sew both sides. When you have finished, sew your other piece of Velcro onto your other piece of fabric. |
Step 6) Pin Edges
Place your two pieces of fabric together so that the Velcro edges are facing out (the Velcro edges should be lined up with one another, so both pieces of Velcro are facing out). Line up your edges, and place a red pin on the top corner. Then pin the other three sides of the fabric. |
Step 7A) Sew Edges
Place your fabric under the presser foot. You want to make sure to lock-it in well, so lock-it-in about 4 times, and begin to sew. Before you get to the corner, lift your presser foot, pivot, and continue. Pivot on the second corner, and then lock-it-in when you get to the edge of the fabric. |
Step 7B) Reinforce
Your purse will be holding your special treasures, so to make sure it is extra durable, reinforce your stitch by sewing around your three edges one more time. Make sure to pivot when you reach each corner, and lock-in your stitch when you reach the end. Clip your threads. |
Step 8A) Clip & Turn
Cut your corners at an angle, being careful not to snip your seams. Then, grab your corners, and turn your purse inside out. It’s a good idea to leave your Velcro folded down so that it does not stick together while you are turning your purse. |
Step 8B) Sharpen Corners
Keep your Velcro turned down so you can easily push out the corners. For nice, sharp corners, use your chopstick or point tuner and push out your corners. Turn your Velcro edges up, and there you are! Your coins will definitely not fall out of this purse! |
Step 9A) Hand Sew
Thread your needle. Open your pouch up. Then, line up the side seams and fold the top opening in half so that you can find the middle of the purse. Once you have found the center, stick your needle in through the Velcro (either side). |
Step 9B) Sew Rosette
Make 3-4 stitches through your Velcro and fabric. Then, pass the needle through your rosette. Carefully stitch 3-4 more stitches, passing your thread through your rosette, your Velcro, and your fabric. Tip: if the Velcro is too difficult to sew through, sew the rosette just below the Velcro. |
Step 9B) Finishing Rosette
Make sure that your rosette is on nice and tight. You are probably pretty good at hand sewing by now, but if you need help, don’t worry. Ask for help, and just keep practicing so you’ll get better and better. Once you have made your 3-4 stitches, tie off your thread, and clip. |
